Can You Use ChatGPT to Write a Book?

Can You Use ChatGPT to Write a Book? What's Smart, What's Not, and What Amazon Requires

Yes, you can use ChatGPT to help write a book.

And yes, Amazon allows it.

But there’s an important distinction.

If AI generates the actual text, images or translations in your book, Amazon KDP currently requires you to disclose that to Amazon when you publish. If you create the content yourself and use AI to brainstorm, refine, edit, error-check or generate ideas, Amazon considers that AI-assisted, and no disclosure is required. Even substantially edited AI-generated content still counts as AI-generated under Amazon’s current definition. Kindle Direct Publishing

That’s the rule.

Now let’s talk about wisdom.

Another Gutenberg moment

The first time I saw the Book of Kells at Trinity College in Dublin, I stood there amazed.

For centuries, monks painstakingly copied Scripture by hand.

Then along came Gutenberg’s movable-type printing press, and suddenly books could be reproduced on a scale that had been unimaginable.

Publishing changed.

We’re living through another revolution now.

Artificial intelligence may someday become a horrible master. But for now, it makes a wonderful servant.

What AI does well

AI can be enormously helpful with the parts of writing a book that happen before and after the actual writing.

It can help you:

  • Brainstorm possible book topics from your own experiences and expertise
  • Research a subject and explore your reader’s biggest questions — with important facts verified from reliable sources
  • Generate title and subtitle possibilities
  • Help organize scattered ideas
  • Build a first outline
  • Suggest Bible stories, Scriptures and quotations for you to investigate and verify
  • Point out strengths, weaknesses and gaps in something you’ve written
  • Draft promotional emails, social posts and other marketing material

In other words, AI can dramatically accelerate a lot of the analytical work surrounding a book.

That can save an author weeks. Even months.

But saving time and surrendering authorship are two very different things.

What AI can’t give your book

AI doesn’t have your life experiences. It doesn’t have your testimony.

It hasn’t lived through the marriage, the loss, the business failure, the answered prayer, the betrayal, the diagnosis, or the moment God changed everything.

And it doesn’t have your voice unless you bring that voice to the work.

That’s the part readers ultimately want.

Your experience.

Your perspective.

Your convictions.

Your stories.

Your way of seeing the world.

Use AI to help you get there faster. Don’t use it to erase the very thing that makes your book worth reading.

Three ways authors use AI — and how Amazon sees them

1. AI helps you plan. You write the book.

You use ChatGPT to brainstorm, research, organize ideas, explore titles, or create an outline.

Then you write the actual manuscript.

Amazon currently classifies this as AI-assisted, which does not require disclosure. Kindle Direct Publishing

This is where I’d encourage most authors to begin.

2. AI writes drafts. You substantially rewrite them.

Be careful here.

You might assume that once you heavily rewrite AI-generated material, it becomes entirely yours for Amazon’s purposes.  However, that is not Amazon’s current definition.

If an AI tool created the original text, Amazon considers that content AI-generated even if you substantially edit it afterward. Kindle Direct Publishing

You will need to disclose that assistance if and when you publish your book on Amazon.

3. AI writes the book. You clean it up.

If ChatGPT generates the manuscript and you mainly edit, rearrange and polish it, that is obviously AI-generated content and must be disclosed to Amazon.

The same rule applies to AI-generated cover images and interior artwork. Kindle Direct Publishing

You get to decide how much AI you’re comfortable using.

Just make that decision with your eyes open.

And because these policies can change, check Amazon KDP’s current content guidelines before publishing.

Verify everything

AI can sound extremely confident while being completely wrong.

So check the Scripture reference.

Check the quotation.

Check the statistic.

Check the historical accuracy.

Check the person’s name.

Check the source.

It is your name is on the cover; not the software’s.

Amazon also makes the author or publisher responsible for ensuring that both AI-generated and AI-assisted material complies with its content guidelines and applicable intellectual-property rights. Kindle Direct Publishing

What about copyright?

Copyright law surrounding AI-generated material is still developing, and I’m not a copyright attorney.

If your project raises a serious copyright or ownership question, get qualified legal advice.

My own rule is much simpler:

Use AI as a tool, not a crutch.

Let it help you think.

Let it help you organize.

Let it speed up the work you hate.

But don’t copy and paste whatever it produces and call that your book.

The real opportunity

I don’t think Christian authors need to be afraid of AI.

I think they need to learn how to use it wisely.

Every major technological shift creates people who refuse to adapt and people who surrender too much to the technology.

There’s a better option.

Use the tool.

Keep your voice.

Keep your judgment.

Keep your story.

Keep the part only you can bring.

AI can’t write the book God gave you.

But it can clear away a remarkable number of excuses for not writing it.

Quick answers

Do I have to disclose ChatGPT use on Amazon KDP?
If AI generated text, images or translations that appear in your book, Amazon currently requires you to disclose that to KDP. If you created the content yourself and used AI only to brainstorm, edit, refine, error-check or generate ideas, Amazon considers that AI-assisted and does not currently require disclosure. Kindle Direct Publishing

If ChatGPT writes a chapter and I rewrite it, is that still AI-generated?
Under Amazon’s current definition, yes. Content originally created by an AI tool remains AI-generated for disclosure purposes even after substantial editing. Kindle Direct Publishing

Can I use AI to help outline my book?
Yes. Using AI to brainstorm and generate ideas while you ultimately create the book yourself falls under Amazon’s AI-assisted category. Kindle Direct Publishing

Is it wrong for a Christian author to use AI?
Used as a tool — the way you might use research software, a concordance, a transcription service or an editor — I see tremendous value in it. The danger comes when the tool replaces your own thinking, experience and voice.
